In our work we have found that women fishers are often paid less for their catch than men! They also have less voice on the committees that makes decisions impacting their livelihoods. Mwambao wants to highlight this inequity and bring about positive change.
This gender disparity is seen throughout small-scale fisheries all around the world.
Women’s activities are perceived as less valuable and women are not fairly represented or considered adequately by decision making bodies. There is a grave lack of data on women in fisheries with many countries not specifying how many women are involved. It’s estimated that women represent 14%, 8.3 million, of those working directly in primary sector fisheries or aquaculture.
It’s time these women are recognised equally!
