OUR APPROACHES

FISHERIES VALUE CHAINS

PARTICIPATORY MARKET SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT (PMSD)

Stakeholders of the octopus fishery (or other marine product value chain) are brought together to discuss marketing and management measures through a series of workshops that review the previously established participatory marketing protocol. This helps to promote fairer pricing and improved marketing as well as equitable revenue sharing. These elements contribute to generate lasting incentives for local management’s support and thus facilitate sustained operation beyond the project’s duration.  A protocol often derives from this activity which helps guide pricing negotiations and revenue tracking and disbursement at the community level.

The PMSD workshops strengthen the understanding of communities towards the octopus market, bring together stakeholders within the octopus market and enable a relationship to be established between buyers and village fishers committees, including negotiating fixed prices for openings and a contribution per kg towards committee operating costs and pre-determined village development projects.

Our Mission is to maintain healthy marine ecosystems through improved sustainable coastal resource management and diversified community livelihoods.
