Our Board of Directors
Our current board has 11 directors from a wide variety of backgrounds. Their support to Mwambao is governed by a charter outlining agreed roles and responsibilities.

Dr. Flower Msuya is a Freelance Senior Researcher and Consultant and expert in seaweed aquaculture
with over 30 years of experience. She has researched on various aspects of aquaculture focussing on
seaweed aquaculture including livelihood development, climate change, health issues and marketing. Dr. Msuya worked with the University of Dar es Salaam for over 30 years, and is the Founder and Chairperson of the Zanzibar Seaweed Cluster Initiative in Tanzania where she links farmers and small-scale processors to research, government and private sector. Dr. Msuya produced the first seaweed value-added product in Tanzania in 2006, products that are currently marketed all over Eastern Africa. She is also engaged in developing climate-smart farming technologies to farm seaweed in deep waters to curb the impact of climate change. Dr. Msuya is a member of bodies of some international organisations including Member of Steering Committee of Safe Seaweed Coalition and Board Member of International Marine Biotechnology Association. She has done a number of consultancies for FAO,UNIDO, KOICA, WIEGO, MacAlister Elliott & Partners and GIZ, including starting seaweed farming in Mauritius, Mayotte, and Mozambique and training farmers in innovative seaweed farming and value addition in Kenya. She is a friend of marine farmers across the Western Indian Ocean region.

Gharib our chief accountant is also a member of the board. He helps us deal with the nuts and bolts of Mwambao finance and helps to keep us all on track.

Dr. Narriman Jiddawi

Dr. Narriman has a PhD in marine biology from the University of Dar es Salaam, where she is a senior lecturer at the university’s Institute of Marine Sciences. She also holds an MS in fisheries biology and management from the University of North Wales and a BS in zoology/botany/education from the University of Dar es Salaam and has researched the age, growth, reproductive biology, and fishery of Indian mackerel (rastrelliger kanagurta) in Zanzibar. She has been a program coordinator of the SIT Tanzania-Zanzibar program since its inception.
